Our Licensing

1. Why We Use a Creative Commons Licence

At Digerty, we believe in open access to knowledge. Our goal is to ensure that valuable content is available to everyone—not just large corporations or well-funded organisations.

To achieve this, we license our content under Creative Commons. This allows people to share, learn from, and use our work while ensuring proper attribution and protecting our mission. Proper attribution not only respects our work but also helps others find and benefit from our content.

We considered using the most permissive CC BY licence, but as a growing publication, we need to safeguard our content from misuse, misrepresentation, and unauthorised monetisation. We may revisit this decision in the future.

2. What Licence Applies to Digerty’s Content?

Unless otherwise stated, Digerty’s content is licensed under:

Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International)

What This Means:

You may share our content freely (with proper attribution).
You may use our tutorials and guides for personal, educational, or professional projects.
You may use our content for non-commercial educational purposes.

You may NOT modify, remix, or create derivative works from our content.
You may NOT use our content for commercial purposes (such as republishing it in a paid course, book, or monetised website) without permission.

Want to use our content commercially? Talk to us first—we are open to discussions. For those interested in using our content commercially, we offer a straightforward permission process to explore opportunities for collaboration that benefit both parties and support our goals.

3. Exception: How Digerty Monetises Its Own Content

While third parties may not use our content commercially, Digerty retains the right to monetise its own work through:

  • Ethical advertising (non-intrusive, privacy-respecting ads)
  • Merchandise sales (branded swag, digital goods, and more)
  • Other revenue streams that support our mission

Our approach to ethical advertising prioritises user privacy and non-intrusiveness, ensuring that our audience enjoys a seamless experience while supporting our mission. This ensures that we can fund our projects, keep our content free, and develop open-source solutions for the community. See our about page for more details.

Note: This exception applies only to Digerty itself—third parties must still obtain permission before using our content commercially.

4. How You Can Use Our Content

5. Special Cases (Images, Code, and More)

  • Images:

    • Many images on Digerty are licensed under CC BY and can be used freely with attribution.
    • Always check individual image credits before reuse.
  • Code, Scripts, and Snippets:

    • Most of our IT-related code is available on our Git server under more permissive licences (MIT, GPL, etc.).
    • Check the specific repository for licensing details.

6. Why We Restrict Commercial Use

We are a mission-driven publication committed to funding Free and Open Source projects. Our goal is to keep knowledge free while ensuring financial sustainability. We do not believe in paywalls, but we also do not allow others to profit off our work without contributing back to the mission.

If you want to collaborate commercially, we’re open to discussions—just talk to us.

7. Have Questions? Let’s Talk!

We’re not here to gatekeep knowledge—we just want to make sure it’s used responsibly.

If you have any questions about licensing, fair use, or special permissions, get in touch with us. We’re always happy to chat.
